Symbiosis was founded by the visionary educationist, Padma Shree Dr. S. B. Mujumdar in 1971 as a ‘home away from home’ for students coming to Pune, India in pursuit of higher education. Symbiosis is today a family of over 36 institutions providing education from Kindergarten to Post Graduation. Symbiosis has over 25,000 students on-campus and over 2,53,577 distance learners. Ms. Swati Mujumdar, the author of these articles, is the Director of Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning and Principal Director of Symbiosis Open Education Society. Her area of research is higher education, distance education and use of ICT in education. She has a keen interest in various policies related to higher education, privatization of education and has presented several papers in national and international conferences.
